Pair Ormolu Repousse Altar Candle Sticks Pricket 18th Century French Gilt Dore

$3,999.00

Outstanding pair of 27" altar sticks coming directly from a wealthy local estate that belonged to an early New York family.

Although we could find other examples of this design, we could not find other repousse examples that were constructed the same way with this ormolu gilt surface.  The base metal seems to be brass with a mercury gilt surface that gives the gleaming gold effect.  Believed to be 18th century French, but possibly with replaced feet.

Please feel free to email us with comments or suggestions.

We believe these are early based on how they are made with the edges pieced together at the edge.  Even the underside of the metal is gilt with the same quality as the exterior.  These would have originally been in a church with symbols of the Lamb of God, wheat and grapes and the all seeing eye at the base.

The top portion can be unscrewed.  These were in a very large home where they sat on a 12 person dining table.

Condition:  Very good.  Possibly replaced feet.  Many examples you find of similar sticks have been drilled and converted into lamps.

Measurements:
27" H x 9 1/4" W at base
